Blood Pressure Checker

130/80 blood pressure

130/80 is slightly raised on the UK chart and stage 1 hypertension on the US chart.

UK chart
Slightly raised
US chart
Stage 1 hypertension

What do the two numbers mean?

130 is systolic pressure, measured when the heart contracts. 80 is diastolic pressure, measured between beats. Both are in millimetres of mercury (mmHg).

Why these labels?

In the UK chart, 130 is the first systolic value in the slightly raised band. In the US chart, either a systolic value from 130 to 139 or a diastolic value from 80 to 89 places a reading in stage 1 hypertension. At 130/80, both numbers meet that US category.

Slightly raised is a chart label, not a NICE diagnosis of hypertension. This reading is below NICE's clinic threshold of 140 systolic or 90 diastolic.

Clinic readings and home averages

130/80 is below NICE's home-average threshold of 135 systolic or 85 diastolic.

These categories describe a number pair, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment target. A single reading is not the same as a pattern or an average.
