Blood pressure basics
  • The two numbers: systolic measures pressure when the heart beats; diastolic measures pressure between beats. Both are measured in mmHg.
  • Readings vary: blood pressure changes throughout the day. A single reading does not establish a diagnosis, and high blood pressure often has no symptoms.
  • Low blood pressure: a systolic reading below 90 or a diastolic reading below 60 mmHg. It can occur without symptoms or be associated with dizziness or fainting.
